Several years ago, I experienced a condition called sleep paralysis. I didn't know what it was called when I first experienced it. I didn't know it even existed because I thought something was wrong with me. The first time this happened to me, I was lying down in bed. It was early in the morning and I was just waking up. The sun was coming up and I could see the sunlight stream in my bedroom.
I tried to move my arm and I couldn't! Gosh, the horror! I could not only move my arm, but I couldn't move my body at all! I started to freak out! My mind was in a panic. I tried to call out to somebody, but I couldn't speak! I could only see and think. I could think words, but they wouldn't come out of my mouth. I was freaking scared! This had never happened to me! At least, I don't remember this happening to me.
I was only a teenager at the time. I can't remember my exact age. I remember thinking that maybe this was a sign of some god-awful disease to come. Maybe, I was about to die, or I was having an outer body experience. I remained in bed, not moving or speaking because my body wouldn't let me. I experienced this condition only a couple of minutes.
Then all of a sudden, my movements and speech came back to me. I could move again! I could talk again! I let out a whisper. I don't remember what I said back then. lol Who cares? So, I let that experience pass. I wrote it off as being a fluke. Dummy, I know. Who lets an experience like that pass? Only me. I thought about it every blue moon and finally thought that it had to be a dream. A nightmare. Though deep down I knew it wasn't.
When I was twenty-five, I experienced another bout of sleep paralysis. But this time, it was an even scarier bout of it. It was another morning, I had just woke up and I couldn't move or speak! I could sense someone or something was in my room. I couldn't see it though. I felt some entity or demonic presence hold me down for a couple of minutes. I felt like demons or aliens were trying to kill me! I couldn't get up or fight whatever it was because I couldn't move and it was invisible.
I felt it and could sense it. It creep me out. I couldn't call for help. The presence went away as quickly as it came. I laid there for another minute. Catching my breath. Trying to let what had happened sink in. What the hell was that? I wondered if my home was haunted. It can't be. I lived there for over five years and I had never experienced anything out of the ordinary.
Never seen anything paranormal in my home. Was it me? Was I crazy, losing it, or was I suffering from some sort of disease or something? As the time went by, I let that second experience pass, but I didn't forget it. I couldn't. Several months later, I was surfing the web and came across a weird article called "Exploding Head Syndrome: The Weird Sleep Phenomenon That's
Way More Common Than You Thought." I read the article and the many comments that followed, from people that claimed that they, too, suffered from sleep paralysis and/or "Exploding Head Syndrome."
It took me forever to get as much information that I wanted. I researched articles about sleep paralysis and "Exploding Head Syndrome" and saw over a million results. I wanted all the information about it as possible. I checked out various sources from creditable medical websites. I learn that anybody can experience these conditions.
All of this happened to me too, I remember thinking aloud. When I read in the article that people can experience an unexplained "loud boom" before or after sleep (This is called "Exploding Head Syndrome") and this was my third experience with this sleep phenomena. I knew that I experienced that too, along with the sleep paralysis.
I thought at the time that something had happened, like a car backfiring, but realized after looking outside it was just me. My research told me that many individuals experienced both sleep paralysis and "Exploding Head Syndrome." I was relieved that I wasn't alone and many people have experienced both conditions. I was frightened during my two bouts of sleep paralysis, but when I experienced the "Exploding Head Syndrome" I wasn't as frightened.
I have learned that if a condition is bad or continues to happen, then an individual should seek medical advice. It's never been that serious for me. I must admit that these "sleep conditions" are weird and I wish that I never experienced it, especially since I didn't know what it was. Now, I'm happy that I know.
Finally, I can put a name to these phenomena. I guess anyone will feel happy if they knew that some weird phenomena that they been experiencing wasn't serious. I must say that the term "Exploding Head Syndrome" sounded a little strange and dishonest for the phenomena. I don't like the term. Maybe, "Booming Head Syndrome" might be a better term for it. I hope I don't experience these phenomena again.
Now, I won't be as creep out by it if it were to happen again and I know what to expect. It was all inside my head.
I also talked to a medical official about these phenomena and guess what they told me, they experienced these phenomena too! So, I wasn't crazy, suffering from some god-awful disease, or seeing hallucinations after all! This experience changed my life. I've learned something new even though it was bizarre.
Next time, I will seek medical help, and next time, well, I hope that there is not "another next time." Now, I know that I was normal! I am normal!
